The Chablais region is largely rural, with agricultural land, forests, and natural areas covering nearly 90% of its territory. Yet this geography brings structural challenges. Employment opportunities are unevenly distributed, forcing many residents to rely on jobs outside the region: according to INSEE (2014), over 20,000 people commute out of the Chablais each day, representing 34% of the workforce, a figure that has steadily increased since 1999.
This imbalance, combined with mountainous terrain and low-density areas, creates significant barriers to inclusion. In its more remote areas, access to services, employment, and support systems is limited, reinforcing territorial inequalities.
Launched in 2011 with the support of the Danone Ecosystem Fund, Le Réseau Cocagne, Evian, and local authorities, Pousses d’Avenir combines an organic market garden with a dedicated training center.
The program provided support to people facing social and professional challenges—such as long-term unemployment, addiction, or mental health issues. It offered professional training in organic vegetable production and distribution, combining practical experience with structured learning.
Participants were employed under 12‑ to 18‑month reintegration contracts, through which they gained hands-on experience while progressively rebuilding the skills, confidence, and stability needed to re-enter the labour market.
The project became independent in 2014 and was handed over to the Pousses d’Avenir association, which continues its activities.
