Dairy farming contributes to 6% of total French GHG emissions. Moreover, livestock farming is often targeted (and rightfully so) as a highly emitting sector, leading to rising consumer and societal expectations regarding its environmental impact.
Additionally, France is facing a decline in the number of dairy farms across the country. In fact, over the past 10 years, the number of dairy farms has decreased by 36%. The aim of this project is also to enhance farmers’ knowledge about the impact of their production through agricultural practices.
Transitioning to Regenerative farming brings significant risks for farmers, who lack time, financing and the infrastructure necessary to drive the shift to regenerative practices. The LP2ST program aims to support farmers at the start of this transition.
French farmers join the L2PST program and benefit from an initial analysis of their Greenhouse Gas emissions and regenerative agriculture practices. Then, based on the farmers’ willingness to go further, experts accompany them to build a concrete and personalized action plan by selecting the right levers to reduce emissions and improve soil health.
1. Reduce farming emissions:
– carbon audits
– Herd feeding management
– Animal care
– Herd productivity management.
– Manure management.
– Crop fertilization.
– Energy usage management
2. Turn farms into carbon sinks:
– Create grasslands
– Install hedges
– Practice intercropping
– Agroforestry
3. Improve soil fertility:
– Reducing tillage
– Practice intercropping
– Extending rotations
– Reducing monoculture
– Optimizing the use and distribution of livestock manure and effluents on the farm
Farmers benefit from personalized support through group training led by experts. They also receive financial assistance from the program coalition, as well as crowdfunding to implement innovative practices.
